Recent changes in Fire Safety legislation

In the reign of William the Conqueror the first piece of Health & Safety Legislation was enforced (1068), known as Couvre Feu – French for Cover Fire, the phrase since being corrupted to ‘Curfew’.

This law regarding covering open fires, then used as much for light as warmth, helped to minimise night-fires in over-populated highly flammable buildings up and down the country.

Almost a thousand years on from that well meaning French imposed piece of legislation the EU has helped create a new piece of Fire Safety legislation, which became law on the 1st October 2006.

The most notable effect of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO) is that Fire Certificates are abolished and have ceased to have legal status.

It requires that any person who has some level of control in a premises must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and make sure people can safely escape if there is a fire.

Amongst other regulation, Fire Risk Assessments need to be conducted and in most cases findings recorded.

Origins of Our Name

From Greek mythology AEGIS pronounced ‘eejis’, both the Greek Gods Athena and Zeus used for their protection a shield.

The name given to this shield was Aegis and to this day the name is used figuratively for ‘protection’ in the English language, ie a news report might have the line ‘The aid was safely distributed under the Aegis of the UN’.
